Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has termed the election of Shaukat Aziz as the prime minister as another 'onslaught' on democracy, saying it would intensify further the 'unwarranted' military role in political mainstream.

"It is an act of the political puppet show enacted by the military rulers," PTI Chief Imran Khan said in a statement issued here on Friday.

He demanded to hold fresh general elections under a neutral/national caretaker government supervised by a completely independent election commission.

"It is the only way to pull the country out of present political, social and economic crisis," Imran said.

The PTI chief said that Pakistan at the moment neither has a presidential nor a parliamentary form of government, as real power rested with a self-imposed uniformed president.

He accused the military rulers of playing with the fate of the country and 150 million people living in it by making mockery of the Parliament and the Constitution.

"They have not learnt any lesson from history and all those in the king's party are acting as their accomplices to a dreadful drama that may lead to another national tragedy," Imran added.

Citing examples of situation in South Waziristan, unrest in Balochistan and increasing acts of terror in Karachi, he said despite unfettered powers since 1999, the policies of the present rulers had led the country to a near insurgency.

The PTI Chief said that the military rulers considered themselves above the law. The much-abused doctrine of "supreme national interest" was merely a smokescreen to defy laws with impunity, he added.

"The military rulers must stop this nonsense of living in a world of their own creation that they know what is best for the country," he said adding that the real owners of Pakistan, the majority of poor people, must have the power to 'hire and fire' the governments.

He said, "Only then policies and their designers will respond to their demands." Political stability is possible if the establishment allows genuine political process in the country, Imran emphatically said.
